Back in my day /lit/ would have rightfully told you to read Pope or gtfo. Now, the reddit tranny hand-holding culture is leaking (just see the threads on /r/books and /r/TrueLit where they talk about how /lit/ actually isn't racist and how they post here themselves). So you get retards recommending inexcusably horrible university editions. And for what? Because they assume 4th grade reading comprehension. They don't care for experiencing Homer. They care about bragging about reading Homer while putting in as little effort as they can.
Princeton has removed its greek/latin requirements for classics students, to pander to the idiot snowflakes. Likewise, /lit/ has removed its brain-cell requirements for anons.

Honestly OP, whatever translation will fit you best depends on what tradeoff you want. If you don't give a fuck about poetics and want decent accuracy and readability, there's revised Rieu (the prose translation). For both accuracy and poetics, at the cost of readability, get Lattimore. If you want poetics and readability, on top of easy-readin' contemporary language that makes autists seethe, by all means, get Fagles. I think Homer is supposed be archaic and difficult, but I'm one of the autists. That's all the translations I know, there's a shitload more. I've been told that Pope is all about poetics, to the detriment of everything else, he had his own contemporary autists with hot opinions.
