Orwell based telescreens off of Germanys and USSR propaganda, Germany swayed massive swathes of people using the radio as a means of perpetuating propaganda. The way that the USSR simply "erased" certain individuals from existence by destroying or altering media and perpetuating false statements in the news was similar to what Orwell described in mini-true. When communism first started out, people were too scared to trust their own families as their own children were sent to be indoctrinated and would turn in their own parents for minor "crimes". Some things that happened under the iron curtain were a thousand times worse than what Orwell described. You could literally trust no one, people feared for their lives so much.

you're better off finding someone who's lived through it and asking them about their experiences. It's too hot of a topic (has been since the cold war) and there's just so much propaganda and misinformation on both sides that it's hard to objectively judge what you're reading. Even books by former "survivors" could be biased or exaggerated. If you can deal with old people and socializing in general (we are 4chan users after all) then first hand accounts from people with zero agenda will be much more revealing not to mention engaging, although ultimately it may be an incomplete picture you're getting.

I have to agree anon, I've heard all sorts of accounts from my family members, a few good ones, many not so good ones. One that stands out was how in the beginning of the soviet union there were such famines going on in ukraine that people were found in the fields collecting the remaining grains from the harvest which lied on the soil after the harvest. The primary bounty was already harvested, but if you were to collect the grains intended to feed your starving children and not turn it over to the government it was seen as theft and you would be shot. That was the punishment, execution. There were signs hung up that tried to discourage people from cannibalism, because starvation was so common. Some people went so far as to eat their own children to prevent themselves from being eaten by their neighbors. These are the kind of disturbing truths that rarely make it into the limelight.

1984 is a Marxist masterbation, the people who enjoy it are just as self-enlightened as the protagonist.
What makes the protagonist so special that he understands what all the other people can't?

The views on the "prolles" are the epitome of Champaign socialism, thinking you are at one with by simultaneously elevated from the prolles.
The protagonist starts "slumming it" like trust funds kids in college looking for cheap drugs and easy sex.

The views on the establishment are one dimensional and without any depth of understanding, and the minority bandwagon is painfully obvious.
The caricature of Mosley is similarly evident to anyone with any context- you will see that certain issues are entirely shut off by the author under this curtain of ignorance he forces over the entire narrative.
It's not a microcosm, the protagonist is ignorant because the author wants you to be ignorant and remain ignorant.
