In the early 20th century schoolchildren were still taught ancient Greek. Joyce, Wilde, Goethe, Shakespeare, you name it, they were all inspired by the Greeks; the overwhelming majority of authors worth reading took either direct or indirect inspiration from Greek literature/stories/philosophy/historiography.
Greek literature, as the first step in the Western literary tradition, references nothing else and is the seed of everything to come. When Freud, in the 20th century, was developing his revolutionary psychological theories he looked to the Greeks for his "Oedipus complex". Historians trace their roots and traditions to the first Greek historians. The architecture in Washington DC, neoclassical. I could go on all day. Ancient Greece is a huge chunk of our society's "lizard-brain".
