Is he a fraud? He doesn't really say anything interesting, even if you ignore all the sniffing and "and so on and so forth".

not a fraud but not a intellectual heavy weight either
but he still has god tier anecdotes

>> No.18878586

I agree that he doesn't have as much to say about the world or human nature as he would like you to believe. Read Sloterdijk instead.

have you read him? or do you just watch youtube?

Byung Chul Han is a lot better

he got famous for writing The Sublime Object of Ideology, which is a great text for looking at the intersection of Lacan, Marx, and Kant. That said, nothing he wrote after that was as good, for good reason. His ideas in Lacan are decent, but nothing amazing. He can explain some ideas very well, but he ultimately looks for ways to justify his own perversion (which is fine, that's one reading of Lacan, it just gets old after about 15 min)
his ideas on marx are quite good but not revolutionary (heh)
his kant work is good for kant work, which is saying something
but really he hasn't done anything earth shattering since his first work

if you want to understand why he got famous, read that.

yeah his anectodes are funny but I feel like that's the only thing he has going for him
everytime he is asked something that could be answered in a very thorough way like for example about racism he just shouts out one of his anectodes, for example the one with the blacks saying they'd like to be called niggers and feel treated like babies if you avoid it at all costs

OP cannot read.

Too be fair, everything worth saying about human nature has been said well before he was born

If you're looking for substance, you probably shouldn't be reading Continentals.

Yes, but he doesn't pretend not to be.

He's a genuine thinker but I've outgrown my interest there.
I'm happy that a philosopher is somewhat famous!
