If you are looking for Gnosticism for Dummies so that you can get ahead in the world culturally, you cannot be helped. If you wish to learn more about this interesting religion/philosophy from primary sources, look on Wikipedia for gnostic books and pick the one that intrigues you the most or one that applies most to your background. I can't speak to any secondary sources, but I'll recommend Coulianou because I really enjoyed one of his books. Elaine Pagels is respected for her work on gnosticism, and I remember being impressed with something she said once.

Plato constructs a system wherein reality emanates from The One, a thing that does nothing but Be. These emanations stack up in complexity, and are from where the Forms come from. The Gods, however, are before numbers. The chief God is Zeus, the Demiurge. This term "Demiurge" means "craftsman". Zeus did not create the world, he just moves existing material around. The Gnostics take this and synthesize it with Judaism, seeing the Demiurge as an evil entity. He has crafted this world as a prison through his malice and stupidity and wants to keep us here against our wills! The true God exists in a higher plane. We must escape this cruel reality and ascend to the higher one. Jesus was an agent of the true God sent to free us from the demiurge.

I believe the world is a simulacrum of a truer reality and that we need to wake up to that reality. Past that, I sympathize with the gnostic sentiment on the problem of evil, but the prison planet thing and other details aren't very convincing to me, I think the Tibetans might be closer to the truth, if anything (the hurdles preventing you from breaking free being essentially projections of your own impure mind, and that you need to find the spark within yourself, not pay heed to whatever is going on outside of it).

What we think of as "truth", I think in the way you are referring to it. It's probably looks something more like this, (True and False). Those things together being the "Truth" but the False matters and has its place. Things being non-dual desu at their source, isn't that relevant to us.
