I often think about writing or search for books with nonhuman protagonists.

However, it is somewhat pointless, as the character doesn't "need" to be a human, yet the novelty of it still hasn't worn off for me yet. How do you feel about this? Any books with nonhuman protagonists?

Regarding this discussion of being forced to remove chapters from web novel sites (like Royal Road) when self-publishing: it only applies to Kindle Unlimited (which is a service where users pay some low amount like 10 or 20 bucks a year to have unlimited access to all books on KU, the author gets a certain amount of money per every page people read, which is way different from the usual model).

Really depends on the author, I know that Laplante tried to go back but supposedly didn't earn as much as with KU so he removed his stories again. Little difference to me since they are available for free if you know where to look.

The biggest issue with KU is that Amazon has a fucking awful recommendation algorithm that basically spams the same half a dozen titles at people. If you get lucky and it recommends you, you're successful purely because *everyone* is getting your book popping up in the recommendation feed, while the rest of the content it basically impossible to find.

I wonder, some people earn thousands from Patreon, while not getting many reviews on Amazon. And obviously web novel sites are a better place to reach more people and gain more patrons.
I think that like with most things, it's not nearly as clear-cut as you make it sound.

I obviously meant thousands every month, that's how that works, people pledge to pay a set amount every month to support artists and the like and in exchange get chapters earlier.

Fair points. I should have said *most* self published authors. There are certainly exceptions. Patreon is an interesting case. I would guess that you only need a smaller, but more active, fanbase to earn decent money there but Amazon etc give you a wider audience but less money per person.

>Patreon is an interesting case. I would guess that you only need a smaller, but more active, fanbase to earn decent money there
Patreon is basically the shining example of that. Smaller, nicher, more autistic fanbases throw money around like you wouldn't believe. The patreon sub fees aren't even the large part of the income, that comes from comissions.

Isn't the problem with Patreon for an author that you are then held hostage to those fans? Having to regularly produce content on a set schedule instead of being able to write what you want and at your own pace.

It's no different to being self employed, you decide your own business model. There's patreons that make huge money while releasing all their content for free, for doing something that the creators would do even if the patron got zero income.

I know a lot of patreons who only get access to videos a day in advance and some discord shit, maybe behind the camera clips for content that is actually filmed IRL, but that's rare.
It depends on what you're selling, but for video content it doesn't make sense to paywall any of it because your content is your advertisement, and nobody will buy something if they can just get it for free from another guy.
I know this last part seems to contradict the whole idea of patreon, but it doesn't. There's a big psychological difference between outright buying something, and giving money to someone to support them because you like their content and want them to be able to make more of it.

Much of the criticism of patreon is from autists who don't understand the last part. They see some useless minor rewards and think people must be morons for paying x sum of money for that when in reality the patreons pay for the "free" content, understanding that it only exists because the creator doesn't have to slave away all day in a factory to pay bills, and the patreon rewards are just a "thank you for supporting me" instead of a product being sold.

Like another Anon said, there's a ton of accounts that cater to niche autistic interests that make bank on patreon, but unless you are into that niche interest you wouldn't know they exist. I personally know of a hand full of accounts that get youtube views in the tens of thousands range and make 3-10k a month on patreon. I know several of them started doing it as a hobby and then either quit their dayjob (if it was shit) or reduced their working hours (if they actually liked it).

I assume there are many such accounts that I simply never learn about, because basically nobody (by youtube standards) knows about the ones I follow either.

Of course there's even more accounts that just never take off on youtube OR patreon, for no apparent reason. I follow a couple that put out incredibly good content, but they don't get as many views are far worse channels that do the same (but far more than the niche channels I follow) and don't make money on patreon either (unlike the niche channels I follow), so clearly there's some special parameters that play into what pays and what doesn't. I think that's appeal to autistic fringe groups that are passionate but aren't served by anyone else who is competent.

I plan to keep reading at least until midway through this time so I can say for sure if I don't like the book. I find the setting/overall plot interesting enough. I like the prose overall, but I am seeing an overuse of ellipses and every now and then Bakker throws in a real head scratcher meaningless line in. Because Bakker writes with a depth and characterization that is truly staggering. His characters are as complete intellectually, emotionally, and philosophically as I could have possibly imagined. The world-building was unbelievable, as each region and race had their own history, reasoning, and stance to the events that unfolded during the course of the novel. It is rather overwhelming and required a great effort from the myself as a reader, but in the end, the effort paid off with a truly amazing ending.

This is my second go at reading William Hope Hodgson. My first was The Ghost Pirates, which I liked.
Would recommend. As far as detective stories go the introduction is absolutely right, you have literally no idea if the haunting is going to turn out to be real or faked by the reveal. Some of the twists are wild. Also, as far as spooky stories go I was made a little spooked.
It's also a fun read.

I have been asking the same questions. I think first and third are related somewhat. Kelmomas was always the No-God because his brain patterns were compatible with No-God, like his ancestor was compatible 4000 years ago. Why was he no god? Maybe the answer lies in the fact that what has happened is determined by what comes after. In book three Moënghus thinks Kellhus deranged.

In the scene where Kellhus has a pole behind him, he is Outside in Hell. One of the Ciphrang tell him that the living (Kellhus) should not haunt the dead (Ciphrang). This could be related to the fact that Kellhus spent some years studying the Daimos, which are also the years some of mysterious deaths happen off book. Make of that what you wish. The decapitants are probably linked to the pole thing

Kelmomas thing is related to the outside being atemporal. "Before" and "after" simply do not apply, to the gods it appears like everything happens at once because there straight up isn't such a thing as "time". Even Kellhus calls the the Daimos "maddening".

I think he lifted the idea from neo-platonism. If you want a more practical explanation "block time" might work. There's youtube videos explaining it why it might be the way our universe functions too.

As to why the No God is invisible to the gods: I don't know. I don't know what exactly happens when it is activated or how it works.

Pretty sure they just said "It's Tekne I ain't gonna explain shit". Inchoroi managed to create machines that can interact with Outside, this is one of those except it required very particular Subject to properly function, because function with so much metaphysical impact couldn't have been achieved by machinery alone

I don’t remember where it was told in the books but I think it was Kellhus himself who explained that the Gods do not see No God because to them No God does not exist at all, they are unable to see it or understand it. I guess it might have something to do with the fact that the machine is supposed to sever the world from the outside and because outside is atemporal, at some point in the future there are less than 144000 souls and the Inchoroi plan finally works. Kellhus himself said it’s not a question do Inchoroi succeed in their plans but how they succeed.

>> No.18805545

Depends on the point of view. For humans that are not part of the 144 000 this would mean death and most likely damnation. Damnation of course is again a subjective opinion of the god(s) and does not always appear logical. Removing Outside from the world would also deny any afterlife or salvation. It certainly does not appear to be a happy world altogether and big picture whole apocalypse seems to be a big cope for the creators of Inchoroi. Humans of Eärwa try to appease the gods to gain salvation. Not a lot is said or shown about the Fanim who hold a different view, are they saved? Are Cishaurim automatically damned because Psykhe works differently? Nonmem simply try to hide from gods and bypass them into Oblivion. Certainly the Consult does a lot of horrible things and have caused deaths of millions so in that regard you can say they are evil to most people. in short, it is complicated.

In a grand scheme of things, getting raped by rape aliens for finite period of time is indeed a lesser evil compared to getting raped by "gods" for infinity. At least for a minority who executes plan, no difference for majority thaat must be wiped out, since gods will have their way with them regardless of outcome.
Humanity didn't consider grand scheme of things in their encounter with Consult's plan however, they only see horrifying forces fucking everything up to a degree where it starts looking like the end of the world, and started resisting. In dialogues between Meppa and Psatma they reveal that both actually know horrifying and inhuman nature of gods, except Tusk teaches to nonetheless try to appease them so they won't throw you in hell (which seems to be default option), while Fane says fuck it and refers to alleged Solitary God that may or may not exist as a way to be saved from hundred. As of Water bearers, they die to Chorae just like any other magic users which could mean they would get same treatment even if they weren't openly rejecting hundred, their sorcery leaves no trace in the world not because of different source but because they exclude their own perception while performing it, hence they must lose their eyes, it is explained during Kellhus thinking about nature of magic somewhere in TTT.

>>18805603
It is unknown if their solitary god even real or it was just some fever dream of mage who was lost in a desert and went blind. Psatma says that Fanim gamble with their salvation, so it can be considered that someone very familiar with outside doesn't outright deny it. A fighting dog got treated, some woman got tortured, and we learn about torture culture. The prose isn't particularly good to me. I was suggested this if I like shingeki and dark souls but the tone doesn't feel similar. Am I brainlet? What is the appeal? I like Russian lit and some dark classics but I'm not really sure what's the point of all this meandering.

I also started red rising. I can't get into the gimmicky color system for classism. The coloring seems like it exists for young audiences to understand, not because it makes sense in-universe. So that's distracting. I heard it has some twists and was also suggested it because of shingeki.

But there really isn't any book like dark souls as far as I can tell sadly. Probably a bunch of shingeki YA though.

>Tell me more about the perfect run, Castle Kingside and The Twelve kingdoms.
A bit late but whatever.

Twelve Kingdoms is an older Jap series from the 90s. The Heroine is constantly confronted with shitty situations and has to change/grow quite a lot into her role. Its been a while since I’ve read the first novel and a really long time since I’ve seen the anime series from 2003. Its great and the OST is amazing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iPaj4XqAW0

Perfect Run:
A Time traveler story. But it juggles quite a few elements. Postapocalyptic Europe filled with superpowers, mixed with drama and comedy elements. And to my great surprise, it works. The time loop starts small. But with each iteration it grows in scope. New characters are introduced, friendships are forged in one and lost at restart and the eccentric hero reacts like you would expect someone with his background would react. It is comedic when it is appropriate. But doesn’t shy away from grim and horrible stuff when it actually happens.

Castle Kingside:
This is perhaps the most subjective take here. I started reading it after I stopped reading the Xeelee Sequence with its barbaric 0.01mm sized people living inside neutron stars.
Its about a successful surgeon reborn into a shitty typical middle-age fantasy world. There is magic, there are daemons, evil church and so on. Nothing new. But the story focuses on how the surgeon tries to improve everyone’s live. There are some (really) convenient elements to help him with this. But I like this kind of stuff. Not page after page of boring battle scenes or whatever Baxter imagined. Just a talented, confident guy showing off his skills to help people. Comfy. But during the end of Volume 1 there is quite a shift in scale. So not sure what will happen next.

I'm only like 30 pages into the book anon, I'll let you know if it continues as it began. Apparently the slave-owning lord (a rare male noble who managed to inherit only because all his female relatives were dead) was particularly fond of bondage and rape smut, but preferred it was written with overwrought metaphors like "blazing monolith of manhood" and "cavern of womanly desire" and so forth, which the protagonist thought very droll, but got his master hot and bothered.

It's too predictable, because Maia is too predictably good at everything. I expected him to experience some trials and tribulations with some consequences, but no. He did the right thing from the beginning and controlled his dark impulses consistently and successfully, experiencing almost no learning curve. You could be a perfect human being and still find yourself in trouble, but not Maia, whose every conversation was a triumph of wisdom and goodness, with villains unable to keep up with whatever he had to (ever so gently) throw at them.

It almost felt as if the author adored her protagonist so much that she would twist everything in his favor. If he took a risk it would pay off. If he wanted a murderer found, it would be. The villains were, one and all, inept and too easily foiled, not up to taking down this paragon of virtue.

Paragon of humility, too: Add to all this the character's endless protestations of imperfection. "Woe is me, I'm so bad at politics!" while showing what can only be called unfailing genius at politics is strange. "Oh no I lack charisma," while everyone, from nobles to commoners are cheering him on is, again, odd. This kid is good at everything. There is nothing he might fail at with the exception of dancing...yet the implication is he's going to be good at that, too. And he's not just perfect for his era, but for ours: he is supportive of his gay subjects, of women who want opportunities outside the house. He respects commoners, loves science. Perfect ruler for his era, perfect for ours.

Upshot is after the first two chapters, I stopped worrying for Maia, which meant suspense went out the window.

Too much perfection is a dull thing.

He is a 16-year old worker. He toils. A life of hardship is all he has ever known. He is a Red, the lowest social class, the dregs of society. He is an uneducated minor, and a miner (I make no apologies for the pun, I've been waiting to ues that one for ages). As the mad scientist who has been told to turn Darrow into a Gold says...

"Say we make his body perfect, there’s still one problem: we cannot make him smarter. One cannot make a mouse a lion.”
That's right. Darrow is not stupid, but he is uneducated. He has not had the privilege of a life's worth of highly selective education. His body is hard, strong, but unhoned in war.

And he dares compete against the Golds, the highest echelon of Society. The strongest, the most powerful, the most intelligent.

Only Darrow dares. And he succeeds beyond anyone's wildest imagination. He is so fucking perfect, and I hate him for it. Despite a complete lack of education, he is brilliant. Just fucking brilliant.

I don’t know the math, but I know the pattern. I solve it and four more puzzles, then it changes once more in my hands, becoming a circle. Mickey’s eyes widen. I complete the circle’s puzzles and then toss him back the device. He stares at my hands while working his own twelve fingers.
“Impossible,” he murmurs.

He succeeds at everything. Lack of knowledge? Fuck that shit, just drink a fucking INTELLIGENCE TONIC AND BOOM! INSTANT GENIUS.
Before I sleep, I drink a tonic laden with processing enhancers and speed-listen to The Colors, The Iliad, Ulysses, Metamorphosis, the Theban plays, The Draconic Labels, and restricted works like The Count of Monte Cristo, Lord of the Flies, Lady Casterly’s Penance, 1984, and The Great Gatsby. I wake knowing three thousand years of literature and legal code and history.

Where was that stuff when I was cramming for my finals in school? :|

Which begs the question, if Darrow can be artificially enhanced like that, why hasn't everyone else? What makes Darrow so special that his artificial physical and mental enhancements haven't been used to make the actual Golds better than they are?

It doesn't work.
