I don't know how well regarded William Zinsser is here, but some of the best advice I've ever come across was his stance on jargon. Basically, the "through the lens ofs" and -- say -- the "at this times" that you see other people use aren't specifiers, they're barely placeholders. You can replace these with "from his perspective" or "now" and have a clearer sentence. These are nothing phrases only picked up and repeated through constant exposure to them. It's for this reason that they're also the ultimate midwit (or Reddit, as the OP implies) alarm. Garish garnishes placed on top nonsensical sentences, their only purpose for existing-- if consciously used, even-- to provide the illusion of style. But! these lukewarm nothing phrases actually indicate a *lack* of style. An insecure, cowardly writer, desperate to show how his encyclopedic knowledge of just how many different ways he can say nothing. When it comes to nothing, these people are geniuses!
Zinsser calls this language weedlike in that we must always be on guard for it; and we must be willing to cut, cut, cut.

Geist can be translated in many ways, but I think it can be best understood if you call it "character" in this case. So Zeitgeist means character of a time. That's probably the most practical translation.
