The main problem I have with Plato is that he thinks the world of forms to be an actually realm when in reality he's actually refering to the Brahman. The "existence" of universals becomes problematic if the Brahman is the only thing that exists. Forms are derived from the Brahman. Universals can be thought about and are certainly helpful to us but I'm still moved that only Brahman itself truly exists.

The tree of life is supposed to show how the wholeness of God (the top circle) is able to emanate and branch out so that we (the bottom dot) are able to percieve and revel in God's greatness. It bears similarity to Gnosticism, Vedanta, and all sorts of other religions and philosophies including platonism.

How does it relate to NGE? Well, broadly speaking it's about the transcendance of humanity into a singularity. Yes, the tree of life is there for symbolism but doesn't really dramatically steer the plot, it just sets the theme. This was very general and simplified but it gets the point across.
