There is this thing called the Diderot Effect named after the French philosopher Denis Diderot's essay Regrets on Parting with My Old Dressing Gown. In the essay, Diderot describes how being gifted a nice, red dressing gown from a friend caused him to gradually replace all the furniture in his cluttered, but cozy, workroom because the gown and furniture were simply too discordant. Essentially, the Diderot Effect is the consumption spiral that a single purchase can create.
