Well, "literary merit" is a nebulous thing. Do you mean something worthy of the Canon, or something that would fit on a lesser tier, like a Roth/Updike/DeLillo tier? Because it seems like some of the "fanfics" mentioned in here already, that are already in the Canon, would qualify for the former.

For the latter, speaking of Evangelion, I've always thought this story was pretty good. Somewhat twisted and troublesome:

Has anyone else tried writing fanfiction before?
I tried to write a fanfiction where Draco is trans and tries to transition magically but his parents disown him and she ends up falling in love with Harry Potter as some kind of ultimate enemies to lovers except Harry is more twisted and dark and aggressively hateful in this timeline but it's just so difficult to write prose
I just fail completely, no idea of how much detail you're meant to use versus details that don't matter and dialogue is just impossible
Any tips?

I'm legitimately astounded this thread hasn't been deleted yet. Are the mods actually going to let us have a fanfiction thread?

>> No.18601655

The answer is yes. Other people here have mentioned famous works that can (debatably) be considered fan fiction, but outside of that it’s entirely possible for high art to be a fan work. The culture of fanfiction websites is overwhelmingly amateur but that doesn’t detract from the sizable amount of good work out there.

>>18594183
Also, this is an unfathomably based take. Tails gets trolled is genuinely a masterpiece and needs an in depth review / breakdown so the masses can broadly understand.

Yes. The issues are that:
a)Modern IP law means that you will be sued into oblivion if try to get it published properly;
b)Author-primacy mentality leads to many writers refusing to seriously work to create "lesser" iterations of other people works, and;
c)Fanfiction have no barriers of entry, are primarily read(and written) by kids, tweens, and manchildren that don't care that much about reading crap, and most are hobbyists trying to kill time rather than creating "good" literature, leading to a deluge of low quality junk overwhelming any potential nudge of competence
