The Italian use it for “ch” so should we.

Yeah, you really can't have one character -> one sound because there are just too many sounds. Russians tried that with the cyrillic alphabet and it drove them to drink. But accents are a reasonable compromise.

Ideally of course the whole alphabet would have a proper overhaul. I mean it's absurd to have a zero look the same as the letter O, or to have "b" and "6" so similar, or to have "M" like an upside-down "W", etc. You should use all the simplest shapes which are completely distinct and unambiguous in any orientation.

IIRC, George Bernard Shaw left some money in his will for a complete overhaul of English spelling, but obviously they didn't actually do anything useful with it.

That definitely is a problem but I think there's a happy medium. Even the reformation of Vietnamese improved literacy drastically there, despite it being a fucking trainwreck.
Here's the Lord's Prayer in my system, as an example:
Ā fāţā hū āt in hevn,
halōd bē ţī neym,
Ţī kingdm kum, ţī wil bē dun,
On erţ, az it iz in hevn,
Giv us ţis day, ā daylē bred,
End forgiv us ā trespisez,
Az wē forgiv ţōz hū trespās agenst ās,
End lēd ās not intū temtayşn,
Bāt dilivā ās from ēvl

Words can be bad for many reasons.

— ILL-BRED WORDS
>Television
is the classic example, yoking together Greek and Latin roots. When it first appeared, purists were appalled, and quite right too. Putting it bluntly, the thing is a mutt. Disgusting.

— TAINTED WORDS
When The Omen came out in 1976, people stopped calling their babies "Damien". Other words can be tainted by unpleasant associations too. For example, it's very hard to use terms like
>Equality
>Diversity
>Inclusion
>Tolerance
these days without making any right-souled, red-blooded man narrow his eyes and release the safety on his Glock. (P.S. The word "gay" also needs to be reclaimed so we can enjoy Wordswoth's poem "Daffodils" as it was meant to be enjoyed.)

— CLUNKY, PRETENTIOUS WORDS
Often there's a simple, straightforward word for something but people use/invent a long latinate alternative to sound impressive. For example,
>incentivize
instead of "encourage".
Sometimes even this isn't enough for them and we get
>disincentivize
instead of "discourage". Or even illogical monstrosities like
>irregardless
instead of just "regardless". As Tolstoy put it, how many negatives does a man need?

— WORDS WHICH ARE HARD TO SPELL
These are bad enough when the thing itself is inoffensive:
>Pharaoh
but when the thing itself is also unpleasant, it's really too much:
>Bureaucracy
>Diarrhea
English likes to trip people up with doubled letters too. You get a second helping of everything in
>accommodate
but you don't double the 'F' in
>aficionado
even though it blatantly needs it. Terrible.

I agree with you on the first two categories but the second two categories just makes me think you don't actually know what these words mean. Incentivise implies an "incentive", i.e. a thing to work towards. Encourage could be someone shouting "you can do it" or whatever. Irregardless you're correct, it is bad grammar. The spelling things... my man... just learn to spell.

You might enjoy Don Juan:

---

And Julia's voice was lost, except in sighs,
Until too late for useful conversation;
The tears were gushing from her gentle eyes,
I wish, indeed, they had not had occasion;
But who, alas! can love, and then be wise?
Not that remorse did not oppose temptation;
A little still she strove, and much repented,
And whispering "I will ne'er consent" — consented.

the idea of "rape" is merely the inverse of "consent". I reject both terms outright. Neither "consent" nor "rape" exist. I have never "raped" anyone in my life, however no sexual act I have engaged in had the putrid fetters of "consent" attached to it either. The sexual act is divine. It ought not to be weighed down by these destructive inventions. They serve no purpose but to rob it of its exeptional quality and erase the visceral nature of the act.

I think a point a lot of you are missing is that language can, and does, contain more than just phonetic symbology. It also expresses, to some degree, the origin and nature of a word. like how ch making a k sound, like in "Arch" displays a greek influence, while things such as "handcraft" and "Manufacury" mean literally the same thing, but one is a Germanic expression and the other is more romance.

And how we tend to catagorize and use different terrms, and in effect spellings of terms to communicate other ideas and connotations. It is not a purely phonetic system, but a compositional one that has some phonetic elements as well as historical and referential elements.

>> No.18528030

>>18528018
>like how ch making a k sound, like in "Arch" displays a greek influence
meant to say "when" ch makes a k sound.

writien language is not purely a didactic phonetic tool as pronunciation is not the sole information contained within words. Not saying we cant change it or there is a perfection of form of course, just that its not a simple topic.
