I do two at varying times, the Tibetan Amitabha mantra "om ami dewa hrih" and the Chinese nembutu "namo amituofo". It depends whether you believe the words and sounds matter or the intent, if not both. I think the OM sound has some genuine power to it, something about the vibration caused when spoken aloud, i think it's almost like the way a cat purrs when ill or anxious. I just woke up from a nap and that probably sounds stupid...

who is it that recites the buddha's name?

i was under the impression that Namo Amitabha Buddha and Om Ami Dewa Hrih were two different things, the first being more of a prayer (giving homage) and the second being a "proper" mantra (invocation). do you consider them to achieve the same thing?

i don't think you sound stupid by the way, aum does have power.

No, i view them pretty much as you described, i'll drop a single namo amituofo when, say, watering a plant or petting a dog, i do the mantra in meditation, i also used it when i injured my neck earlier in the year (like the aforementioned purring cat).
