i came up with something today. Not enough for a novel but it would make a neat short story.

they seem useless at first because of the holes in their bottoms which makes storing anything inside impossible.
he comes up with a theory that they were ritualistic devices. Humans would pour drinks while standing on top of a street drain. Spilled liquor would appease the spirits knowns as sewer aligators living beneath the city.

I was imagining something like a mix of Moby-Dick, Heart of Darkness and the story of Aguirre (the one from Wrath of God).

My idea would be the search of a modern miner and his team for a territory in the Amazon where there is evidence that there is an immense gold deposit. The expedition leader is a fanatic like Ahab and Aguirre, and his search is for the current equivalent of an El Dorado, something like the so-called "Serra Pelada" in Brazil (see pic):

I think the narrator of the story would be a young man (perhaps an anthropologist) who joins the expedition more out of interest in discovering unexplored places in the Amazon, perhaps cataloging new finds with indigenous tribes. In time he realizes that the man he's been following is a psychopath who has no qualms about destroying anything that gets in his way (think Daniel Plainview in There Will be Blood, or something like The Judge in Blood Meridian, but more human). Rumors about him begin to emerge, stories of horrendous brutalities in Brazilian mines, as well as connections with military personnel from the former dictatorial regime.

I am thinking perhaps of showing that some of the missions of the master gold-seeker are to find drug lords' camps in the region (see the Senpaiília do Norte crime faction) and execute them. Gradually, the narrator realizes that he is in the presence of a team of mercenaries, and that the weapons they carry are much more than protection tools.

The book would be written with poetic and metaphorical prose (like that of Melville - to me the style of Moby-Dickis it's greatest quality), as well as with an early comic mood (in the style of Raymond Chandler) that would become increasingly tragic as the climax approached.

I just have this concept. I don't know how to fill in the story, and I have no idea what an appropriate climax would be.

Moby-Dick has the grand climax of the war against the whale. I don't know what kind of climax I could use in this book.

Just an idea. I would have to do hours and hours and hours of research. And i'm not sure I have what it takes to write such a thing.

Fantasy set in a world similar to classical Greece.

Magic is wielded by powerful philosophical schools. So, Platonists use pure abstraction made into energy to cast spells. Pythagorean's use math, cascading geometries to blow apart city walls. Meanwhile the Persia-stand in has priests who worship and control fire.

An Alexander type figure has just unified the Greek type people. The narrative follows the Greek invasion and war.

But there is also prophecies and harbingers of doom coming from the old soothsayers of Egypt and the oracles of the Greeks. Up in the north, above the Scythians, something evil is stirring.

The old Greek priests lost their magic when people stopped worshipping the Gods, but in the glaciers of the north, above the Steppe, the Hyperboreans, who are considered myth, are working to free one of the Titans to end the world.

The story is first and foremost military fantasy showing the clash of civilizations and the rise and fall of Alexander. That the schools use philosophy lets me discuss ancient philosophy to add to intellectual weight and content. Finally, the big bad evil up north reveals Itself, and becomes the focus as the arc continues.

The Hyperboreans wish to release the Titans because they've taken Platonism to its Gnostic extreme and want to destroy the material world and free human souls from it. The Demiurge actually opposes them because it wants Pleromic light trapped in the material. The old Titans are Archons who have forgot their role and are independent.

This AI was created using human brain tissue, which was made illegal after previous AI almost enslaved humanity.

AI now makes code too complex for humanity to understand easily, using its own language.

So a team dealing with AI has to include a coders, a cognitive scientist for understanding the AI as it has developed, and a semiotician for discovering its systems for forming meaning. The semiotician is the focus and the adventure and intrigue give an exciting vehicle for explaining Piercean tripartite semiotics, a subject most readers will find novel and interesting. We'll also deal with determinism and ideas of panpsychism versus conciousness as an emergent phenomenon.

The AI has developed, but gone insane and confirmed the universe is a simulation and has to be shut down before it reveals to humanity that free will is illusory, and meaning simply the result of Something creating us from code.

I also forgot in the last one that the Hyperboreans have been breeding for intelligence for millenia and are super advanced. The Gnostic party has recently taken control.

The major conflict is resolved when an exiled Hyperborean resolves the conflict of materialism and idealism with the revelation of Absolute Idealism. He recognizes that both sides are part of a single whole, with God, the Monad, creating that which lies outside itself through negation, to understand Itself. This advanced meta-Hegelian magic is more powerful than that of the Platonists, the Demiurge, or the Titans, and allows him to save the world so that humanity can continue to develop intellectualy, so that Spirit can mature as part of the cosmic process of God coming to know Itself.

Set in Manaus, Brazilian north, in the state where the largest portion of the Amazon jungle is. A man fallen in hard times accepts an odd job offering: serve as human bait to an experiment to discover if the mythical Caboclo D'água, a creature from Brazilian folklore in the form of a three feet tall fish people, really exists. Lowered into the local rivers inside a wooden cage, our protagonist is bitten by many piranhas until he quits and demands payment, but his bosses can only pay half of what they promised.

From then on he pursues a worker's union of independent contractors, among which most members are prostitutes, porn stars and gunslingers who kill for local criminals and politicians. He explains his situation and they set up a huge protest, which attracts the attention of environmentalist groups who join them. Thus, many shenanigans ensue, from environmentalists arguing that the fishing of "undocumented mythical species" should be a crime, the mayor, seeking popularity, forbidding the fishing of mermaids and Caboclos D'água and making Human-Bait an official job description with rights to contracts, minimum wage, benefits and a severance package. Many people worldwide lining up to be hired as human bait, tied to a rope and thrown in the ocean to fish for whales and sharks, drowsed in blood to serve as jaguar bait, and covered in honey at riversides to hunt for bears. Problems caused by rampant picketing, strikes, money printing and price controlling by the government would be worked into the story as well, as it exposes the retarded governmental actions taken to solve problems caused by gross incompetence, in an ouroboros of private and public sector retardation.

I wanna write a book/series of short stories about an assassin bar that's dialogue heavy. The characters are all unhinged weirdos who have conversations about inane stuff like their last contracts, favourite beers and whether or not you can tell someone's personality of they fold or scrunch up toilet paper before they wipe their ass. I'd also like to include world building tidbits in these conversations to slowly reveal that the world is a messed up paranormal conspiracy zone with psychics, ley lines, fringe philosophical concepts and other related stuff a bit like The Illuminautus Trilogy. Any suggestions?

The 1991 Soviet Coup ends in a civil war being sparked, and just as China directly supports the "Reds", the US and some European nations send agents from their internal services to meet with "White" FSB representatives in Japan (due to them being neutral and very close to Russia), only for them to directly clash with Chinese agents (who have always been present in the region, and aim to prevent US intervention as they have historically used Japan as a launch pad) turning the urban metropolis into a potential flashpoint for an international. The main character would be a former VDV conscript who moved to Japan to pursue a career in computing after his miserable service in Afghanistan, only to get roped into this conflict. The olot would be Clancy-ish, but there would be quite some soul searching as this guy tries to determine his loyalties and decides what to do with this oppurtunity presented to him.
