Is this the best book written by a woman?

It's a great book because the description of the Monster reveals a maternal instinct.

I only read it recently but I was shocked by how good it was. Her prose is magnificent.

One of the few books by a woman author that I enjoyed
Which makes me suspect that her husband wrote it

>> No.18490699

>>18490685
lol the version I read had a huge long intro claiming how sexist it is to even conjecture that her husband wrote it, and then went on to say all the worst bits were his fault.

It is very peculiar that Percy didnt write a story for the contest

>> No.18490709

>>18490685
Percy almost 100% wrote it. I had my suspicions when reading it too. I was thinking "There is no fucking way a book this brilliant could have been written by a woman."
Then I went down the rabbit hole and found out that there are hidden easter eggs in Frankenstein and references to unpublished poems and journal entries by Percy. I had an old annotated edition that pointed out all of the instances of this in the book and it happens like 20 times. But of course you can't even suggest that he wrote it today.

Let's say that Percy wrote it or he and Mary wrote it together. Why would Percy write a novel and then refuse co-authorship or pretend that his wife wrote it?

The only female author I can tolerate is Evelyn Waugh

>> No.18490857

Pure speculation, but he could have felt the work was "beneath him," in the sense that he was primarily a poet and wanted to be recognized as a poet.
It would be like if James Joyce ghostwrote Hunger Games. He would want to keep that shit under wraps.

>> No.18490865

>>18490709
since Mary and Percy lived in the same house and were fucking each other, isn't it possible that this happened
> hey Mary check out this new poem that I wrote
> wow Percy dear, that's so beautiful, I'm going to include it in this book I'm writing

>> No.18490877

>>18490865
Yeah it could be, but what seems more plausible?

>woman literally creates the entire genre of horror out of thin air and writes nothing ever again
or
>one of the best English poets of all time who blends Romanticism and gothic themes invents horror

Call me crazy but the latter makes more sense.

>> No.18490880

>>18490877
there are lots of one hit wonder musicians, similarly lots of authors are also known for 1 good novel. Look at Bram Stoker, only Dracula is good, all his other novels are shit, but no one is saying that someone else ghost wrote his books

>> No.18490900

>>18490880
The difference is that Stoker honed his craft and got it right on his 5th or 6th try. Mary got it right on the first try.
Could she have written it? Sure. But the evidence leans more towards Percy. It fits his style and overall ethos more.
t. have read nearly all of Shelley's complete poems
I mean unless he had his wife in such a state of submission that she had his EXACT views on humanity and art, etc., that she parroted them in the form of a novel. It's just really unlikely.

Those types dont lie exactly they just shut off their 'faculty of truth' as it were, like the mental mode in which you try to assess a statement as true or false. They are focused simply on finding arguments to support a morally sanctioned position, or to attack any dissenting voices. It's a kind of semi-hysterical, manic mindset; you can't stop and really think obviously because you can't understand too much or you'll see the truth. That's why they behave in that odd fluctuating mixture of agitation, contempt, mockery, rage, etc. that comes out even in the tone of an encyclopedic entry, they are in a state of self-induced disconnection from rational appraisal of reality paired with a conflicting need for intellectual and social prowess. I remember that mindset intensely from when I was still one of those people, having been brought up as one, you kind of know on some level you're just saying random shit but you can never quite focus on that awareness because it would lead you too close to the danger of thinking clearly about the taboo, so it all just registers as anxiety, irritation, etc. that you blame your opponent for.
