As a youth he was never properly socialized. He spent more time reading fiction then hanging out with friends, so his expectations and ideals were all set by the actions of the fictional characters he read about, rather than on the adults and peers of his life. Any attempt to emulate fiction in reality was met with predictably humiliating results, which caused him to socialize less, read more, and grow more and more frustrated with the world around him, making a vicious feedback loop.
