>be me
>12 year old me reads fantasy
>get to action scene
>heart is pounding, reading really fast, in a state of flow
>be 27 year old me
>action scene makes my eyes roll back into my head with boredom
>get really into scenes where main character is finally linking up with his love, or some other social drama involving the heart
Is this what it’s like to grow up? I never imagined being an adult male who loves romance

I'm an adult (younger than you) and the action scenes are still thrilling.

Depends on the build up. The action scene in Blood Meridian for example with Holden making gunpowered was great because of the build up, but the random fights weren't that interesting because of how common and droll they were. What I find really heart racing is when a character btfos another verbally, like in Stoner.

I find action scenes really boring because they're usually difficult to describe considering how fast one can read. The time window of a fight with punching for example is really boring since it's so fast. There's not enough room to imagine the sequence of physical movements, as compared to accomplishing the atmosphere of a place description, emotions, or dialogue. Not to mention every writer has the same trite descriptions of adrenaline with no purpose or meaning. I still like when a story has some of these scenes, but they're usually not my favourite unless it's supposed to be shocking or graphic, like in a horror novel or American Psycho or something. I want to read a comfy chapter with an interesting conversation, not a bunch of sentences that basically just say, "I swung my sword right, and then he dodged, and then I went overhead, and his head was cleaved from his shoulders!" Feels like they're just putting in garbage in anticipation of getting a film or television adaptation.

There's more nuance and excitement in a scene like the Man from the Underground pacing back and forth for hours than there is in any fight scene in any work of fiction.

I am not opposed to seething. As a matter of fact, I was seething at something completely unrelated just two hours ago. However, you have given me nothing to seethe about, since your vocabulary seems limited to no more than four words at a time.

Both of these are cringe. Action scenes are for edgy 13 year-olds and social character interaction is for women. Do you even /lit/ bro?

Not to jerk off McCarthy to much, as if that was possible but his actions scenes tend to be some of the most enthralling stuff I've ever read.
