Are the non-Frank books really that bad?

>> No.18200757

Yes they are. They even contradict the canon. The "ending" of the series is basically just a bad fanfiction.
Just don't keep going after God Emperor, it's not worth it.

Good luck finding anyone who has even read them.

I stopped at the first book because I hate Paul for being a chad

Pathetic.

All the dune books are bad

I finished the book but I never liked teenagers who were able to get laid. So I'll stop there

Tfw on page 70 or so of my very first reading of Dune ever. You can tell Frank was hooked into some interesting ideas floating around in the 60s, like the imperial conditioning. The idea of the prophesies for that priestess cult being implanted everywhere as a protection mechanism is prescient af. Haven't felt this much enjoyment from a novel in ages. I feel like read Guenon.

I was reading them in elementary school, grew out of them by middle school. Kept starting The Butlerian Jihad and dropping it, no magic.

Is it worth reading the sequels if I though the first one was kind of boring and felt like an extended intro and then just kind of ended right when I thought the actual story would begin?
On one hand it seems like the rest of the books should give me what I felt was missing but maybe they just repeat the same process?

Messiah is pretty much the real ending of Dune and it's pretty short so maybe go through that one.
If you still can't get into it there's no point reading Children of Dune which is just a setup for God Emperor, a more philosophical book.

Alright I'll give it a try thanks. I always felt like it had a bunch of cool concepts and ideas introduced and then when things started to seem like they were going to actually get interesting after the introduction it timeskipped and ended.
It felt like reading erotic literature and then when they finally get to the bedroom it fades to black and picks up again the next morning.

How dense are these? I have lots of time to read, but I'm mentally drained after school and can't keep my attention up if they're demanding reads

I didn't find them very dense but then my day job is reading medicinal chemistry papers and ISO standards so I've probably got a fucked up barometer.

I totally agree with the chart. I just finished the third book and yes it is weird (a fucking human worm, yes, of course, why not). I don't know if I want to read the four book, maybe I'll do but not now. The first book was good though.

So, the bottom line is to not read all the "EU" of Dune.

The first book is certifiable garbage, I shudder to think how they could get much worse but I know that they do.
