Is the introduction in the Fitzgerald version of the Illiad sufficient for someone like me who knows very little bout the origin of ancient greece, or should I supplement with something else, perhaps the Fagles introduction?

It is sufficient. The book is pretty self-explanatory. Further historical background is valuable but not necessary. The true challenge is to get used to the writing style, but it's easier than reading Joyce or other post-modern stuff, so you should be good. Personally i feel the iliad is much more accesible than the tragedies of ancient greece.

Get the Butler version. He reordered everything so it's in chronological order, leaves out the lists, and makes the story make sense for someone with no background. Then get the Lattimore version which tries to imitate the sound of the original Greek.
