Does anyone have a good list of books that demonstrates how English developed? Beowulf --> Chaucer --> Shakespeare is the general idea I've got for stuff to read, but there's probably someone here who can fill in the gaps between those guys.

David Crystal - The Encyclopedia of English Language has around a hundred pages on this theme (actually not in the format of an encyclopedia, and made to be very accessible)

Also if you want a list of text from the different periods, just like get a book like pic related. Just make sure you don't get one that translates the middle English stuff and you'll be fine, most don't anyway

Yeah it's not like the superiority of English could have anything to do with Britain's relative ethnic and cultural isolation. it's four, they're missing Old Norse from the Viking invasion (mostly introduced grammatical changes, not really vocab, but possibly also "she" (which was "heo" in Old English, but this is very hotly debated and there's no real consensus on where the word came from)
