Is it worth reading as a fan of the original OVA series?
How is the translation?

The translation is okay, not stellar but okay enough to read.

translation is poor, I don't know how the original text was but there are many typos in the first couple volumes. I think they got a new translator and it got better later on. They are pretty fun reads but I prefer the anime, I tolerate the dryness of the material more there

I tried to discuss the anime there yesterday and the discussion turned to retarded nonsense such as AI Autocracy. Just look at this shit.

I've never watched the series, but I read the books and enjoyed them.

I didn't like the experience of reading the books at all. The translation was typical for LNs and they went through several different translators who had noticeably different styles. The poor prose meant that the characters felt flat and the lack of a soundtrack or of neat 80s anime visuals meant that all you really had was the plot, which when isolated often feels very mediocre. Just watch the series again and watch the Gaiden stuff or the movies if you still want more, the novels add nothing to the experience at all. Even the remake is a better use of your time.

>something without an ego, no desires of its own
This doesn't even make sense, you can't have a hyper-intelligent AI that can think in pure abstractions not unlike humans, yet say it lacks a will of its own. How can something be benevolent yet lack will?

I think this is spot on.

If you loved the anime, you probably might as well stick with it, it's a remarkably faithful adaptation.

If you're OBSESSED with the anime, then you should read the books, they're perfectly readable, the translation is certainly "good enough" and still manages to preserve the author's attitude and perspective, I think.
