I would recommend the Hollanders’ translation. Not only is the poem beautifully rendered, but the notes are incredibly thorough. Basically, they go through the poem with a fine-toothed comb and give a history of the critical debates line by line.

There's a lot and it's difficult to approach. The work is long and most translations have difficult and unclear bits that trip you up later. Reading it in Italian is the only real way but it's unfeasible for most.

Yeah, the notes become more consequential to appreciating the poem as you make the translation to Paradiso. You can get away with minimal notes in the Inferno—it’s easy to understand why people who were gluttons while alive have to spend eternity gorging on shit—but it’s not so easy to understand why Franciscans and Dominicans must spend eternity square dancing with one another,
