>"Changing the topic to Hitler's expulsion of the Jews, it appears that in this, too, there are a lot of reasons for his actions. While it is a very cruel policy, when looked at from the point of view of the current and future happiness of the entire German people, it may be that, for a time, some sort of extreme action is necessary in order to preserve the nation."

Heidegger's entire temperament becomes perfectly sensible when you realize he comes from South Germany. He's not Bavarian but he comes from Germany's other southern state. The South Germans are just fucking jolly, they love to have a good time, eat good food, drink good wine. It's only when you get to northern Germany that you get the frigid Teutonic assholes.

I remember reading that he and his family were a very tight knit, so confident in their Catholic faith were they that they didn't feel the need to go to church regularly but instead prayed at home, and lived a peaceful and contented life together, until Martin questioned his faith. But even though they couldn't understand this and it brought a melancholy emotion to their house, they continued to support him.

All my family is from Stuttgart and countryside around the black forest.
my grandparents today still do not get religious devotion. They are listed as protestant officially but never go to church and churches only ever play a role for marriage and funerals.
My point is that when they talk of early 20th century southern germany, they say it was not religious at all. One side of my family was devout socialist workers party and the other was plain a political workers and religion was absolutely irrelevant to the time and place. My grandma always says how weird it was after the war how all the sudden everybody went to church and the church was an excuse to have something after having all other ideals/ideologies ruined through the war. Professor of political philosophy at my uni also said that the remnants of christianity in germany today are solely from the revival post war or new sects from america. early 20th century was more atheist than todays germany unironcially. Two great grandparents died without evern having made the symbolic effort of having a priest show up by their death bed.
Christianity plays a non factor and certainly didnt have any power in early 20th century.

The most annoying thing about this sentiment is that there was a tremendous amount of Ashkenazi Jews who were patriots who literally died for Germany in wars and literally made it better and more powerful through invention and thrift. The fact that Germany killed most of their Jews probably actually set the country back grossly in terms of geopolitical power and economy.
