Why did Odysseus have to butcher those poor servant girls at the end?

The mentality of males in this age. Homer thought nothing of a sovereign pirate slaughtering some of his slaves.
It’s fiction, so we can imagine it never happened or they were evil or whatever. We shouldn’t want a return to monarchism. It was never a good idea.

They were literal assholes who sucked up to the suitors every chance they could. A little harsh? Yah, but Odysseus is rightfully pissed at how much disrespect his former comrades displayed to his home, his wife, and his son.

I liked Odyssey but that scene with some others at the end were very disgusting.

I would be pissed too if my home is turned into a public shithole (it actually happened to me last year), but kill everyone is not going to solve anything, just demand or force everyone to leave.

However, that's due the mentality of males during that age as >>18081642
says.

Are you aware that it did, in fact, solve everything?
Are you aware if he had told them to leave they would conspire against him and kill him?
Are you aware that there was no police force?
Are you aware that they didn't have cellphones?
Are you aware that there was no internet to track them?

Also,
>mentality of males

Then why didn't Penelope complain about it or abandon Odysseus in protest against his acts?
Women were also pro-war. You're talking as if women back then were contemporary A**rican feminists.

Odyssey is fictional, my dude. Do you think war and killing is as "epic" as this work shows it?

Also I was pointing out what Odysseus did from my modern point of view, but it is understandable considering the times when Odyssey was written.

You are right about Penelope though. My mistake.

As my posting here becomes less and less frequent, I have lost track of how many trips circulate with this symbol; however, to whomever vomited this post, I must say I am amazed that you have not forgot how to breathe and consequently choked to death. If you are the true butterfly, aren't you 40? What the fuck have you been doing for all these years? I pray that anyone committed to searching for truth would not post such banal, offensively low quality things. As if your analysis of Greek society in classical antiquity wasn't insulting enough, how have you managed to get this far in life without learning about political philosophy?

The Odyssey presents a pretty antiwar message. Odysseus discovers that Agamemnon was killed by his wife, everyone he meets in the underworld is miserable, Achilles wishes he could see his son again. All of this because some guy gave an apple to someone's wife.

People don't really understand how alien the thoughts of the ancients were. They were nothing like us in any shape or form. Killing came naturally to them and their morality was nothing like our own.

The basic “patriarchal” mindset is still very much alive despite the general derision of monarchy. The business world is still stuck in the feudal scheme for no good reason. We claim to have ended slavery, but we have several different varieties still being practiced today right under people’s noses and everybody thinks it’s just normal and natural.
No, it’s startlingly similar, from my way of thinking.

people say this about this book and the Iliad aswell and while I think that it is a valid interpretation, I also think this is our modern biases talking a bit. Just because the book shows the difficulties of war doesn't mean it was meant to be an anti-war book.
>>18082534
while I won't claim to understand the true thoughts of the ancients I don't think they are as far off from our own as you are suggesting, there are still first world counties that practice the death penalty as part of their justice system and engage in wars.
