What if I went from Mythology Edith Hamilton to The First Philosophers?
I really want to get into philosophy but I don't want to force myself to read all of those plays and epics.

poetry (plato doesn't bother to differentiate between theatre and epic poetry) is at the center of the educational apparatus in athens and plato was explicitly fighting against this (or more specifically, the preliterate homeric mindset). I had the opposite problem you had, where I don't give a shit about philosophy and only wanted to read literature but you gotta read both to get a genuine understanding of what was happening

Nope sorry, you're fucked unless you follow this exact chart some guy made up. You'll have 0 comprehension of the later works unless you follow this to the letter.

You can skip the Hamilton and just start with the First Philosophers.

Your reading of Plato will be a little bit more informed with all this background, sure, but going with this chart if you're only interested in philosophy is overkill. Your time will be better spent reading actual philosophy from day 1.

Why is Edith Hamilton the default for starting with Greek mythology? Surely there must be dozens of stronger retellings of the fundamental Greek myths written by men.

Just drop philosophy and read the epics, tragedies and histories instead. Unless you're a loser of course.

You don't even need to read edith hamilton. I would recommend that you read an overall history of philosophy book though. As long as you start with the pre-socratics or plato
