How do I nudge friends away from Stoicism? It's making them very boring and annoying.

>> No.18048078

Consider what it is about stoicism that irks you so much, and why you feel the need to sway loved ones away from philosophies you find "boring".

>> No.18048134

>>18048078
It's turning them into twenty-something equivalents of grumpy old people, through automatically writing off all possibilities for change because that's 'following passions' or something. It just sounds like a really shitty attitude to be having at that age, desu, especially since they're not NEETs.

>> No.18048147

it's annoying but they'll get over it probably, although some people remain in perpetual adolescence so it's a coinflip

They're really going about it wrong. In my opinion stoicism is best used as a method of coping with pain. When I lost a very close loved one I tried turning to religion and philosophy and only really found comfort in stoicism. It's not a philosophy of achieving happiness, or even something you'd want to base your life on, it's a useful tool to employ in a persons spiritual toolbox, so to speak. You don't find happiness with stoicism. You only avoid pain.

Look at it from a different angle. Are your friend’s lives better now or before they ‘adopted’ stoicism? Be honest too, not just if they’re having more fun of whatever bullshit, but if their lives are really looking more productive and promising. If their lives are better now then you’d be a shitty friend for wanting them to change just because they’re boring. If their lives are worse, just tell them that real stoics would shut the fuck up about being stoic and stop being annoying.

Consider life like a pathway to a destination. You can enjoy the walk, but you err when you mistake the walk itself for the goal. You can enjoy the means but dont lose sight of the end. It seems they're fixated too closely on the end while forgetting to appreciate the means.

Ignore the other replies and listen here anon, for ive your solution. Nothing shall change your friends, immersed in their own ego, but to force them to experience tremendous passion. Only therein will they realize their foolishness. I know because this process is what saved me. And so here is how you shall accomplish the task. Create a situation in which you're with one of them, preferably the one the others hold in highest regard, when they are asleep. And then, cover their face with chloroform and drag them into a secluded place. The chloroform must be kept over his face throughout the dragging, else he will wake. It is imperative that you take him somewhere unfamiliar. And then, secure him in place and make yourself scarce. Thus completed, have your black associate, stark nude except for a balaclava, stand before your friend. The black man must be wielding a handgun and a melee instrument. Once your friend awakes, your black friend must begin shouting at him in Turkish (the most aggressive sounding of the non-romance languages). Your black friend must then escalate, making threatening motions and screaming like a maniac (convince him to do this with a reward of Marijuana). Finally, have him drop the melee instrument, fire the handgun, and put it to your friends head, whispering in faux-broken English "how art thou so for me, white man?". At this critical moment, you fire a rifle you had brought with you, loaded with a blank, the black man let's out a thorough shriek and disappears into the night. Your friend will be overwhelmed with emotion, in touch with passion. If he wishes to make love to you right there, you must allow it. This shall inexorably turn him from stoicism. Goodluck my dear.

You have the wrong attitude. You shouldn’t be trying to make people think the way you do because it irks you. That’s selfish. However, if you think their worldview is flawed then correct them. I don’t think stoicism is the definitive account of reality, so I would argue with your friends about its shortcomings. Argument when done in good faith is the working out and promotion of truth.

>> No.18049549

>>18048162
I think this is a really good way to put it. Stoicism is the most effective when dealing with something mentally tough, loss, grief, failure, etc. There is little discussion on being happy, success, cause it all just reverts back to accepting what’s within your control and avoiding the pain of things that aren’t.

I do disagree that you couldn’t use this as more all encompassing life philosophy, as you certainly could, and I don’t even think when applied correctly it would be that boring.

I've gotten into Stoicism in the past but it isn't developed enough for me, so I'm instead getting deeper into christianity as a cope for my life. With Christianity I can look at church history, read bible commentaries, read theology or apologetics, etc etc etc. The scholarship never ends and the books are pretty cheap since there are so many on the exact same subject. Stoicism has nowhere near the amount of authors and I feel like 75% of the books are meant as an introductory text.

ha yes the atheist idol of the atheists. well done.

HOWEVERNietzsche is an atheist, a nihilist, postmodernist which appeals to a lot of liberals and other deeply neurotic teenagers

Nietzsche lives only in atheism and is the achievement of the secular humanism which booted Christianity out of power. Nietzsche is overtly anti-christian, and it permits to all the atheist bug men to actually see themselves as the righteous resilient guy who create his own values
In effect trannies are the best ubermen ever: they ate to see themselves as they really are, so they change both their neurotic spirit and also their body to match the narrative of the ubermen and even better, they impose their values to non-trannies.

The overman is actually the last man: the overman despises so much reality that after seeing nihilism, that out of resentment for reality, the uberman CHOOSES to sink further in his delusion by building a narrative where is not the last man, but actually the opposite: the uberman who create his own values, ie living in own brain farts until he dies.
