Anthony Kenny on Dawkins

>Moving from The Extended Phenotype to The God Delusion is like moving from the Financial Times to The Sun

Thoughts?

Yeah it's true.
Dawkins philosophical depth isn't profound and it's clear he is not fully aware of the literature.

I think if you've studied any theology or philosophy, Dawkins' arguments against God/Religion seem basic, even infantile. There are better critiques out there.

Having said that, Dawkins was instrumental in convincing a lot of laypeople (the masses, especially Americans) that it's okay to be an atheist. It sort of backfired a little with reddit-tier atheism, but the association won't last forever.

Dawkins is a based. He regularly triggers feminists and leftists alike, speaks out in favour of free speech, fairly criticises Islam and btfos any accusations of islamophobia. I don't belive in God, but his atheism I find annoying and overbearing.

>>17994325
He's an evangelist. Pretty weird to accuse someone who's job it is to push an idea "overbearing".

>> No.17994794

Dawkins writes for an audience that is a) already sure of its beliefs and only wants to be told how right they are, and
b) not very intelligent

The thing is, you don't really have to go deep into any kind of school of thought or philosophy to realize religion, especially any kind that proposes the existence of an omni-anything being is fundamentally retarded. Just like you don't need a doctorate in the field of psychophysics to know that sugar is sweet.

Still, I don't think getting rid of religion as an idea is the way to go, rather the goal ought to be limiting the power of religious institutions to fuck over schools and radicalize morons. The idea that Jesus loves anyone is very useful in providing closure to 80 IQ pregnant retarded sexually abused crackheads to get their life together, just from a practical point of view it's naive to believe people can be swayed be "oooohhhh the beauties of science".

Honestly I still find Gould's NOMA to ultimately be the best viewpoint, religion is already trivializing itself, there's not point fucking with it unless it fucks with education.

No, just get rid of it and we can go from there. Why do we go about accepting falsehoods and then producing mental gymnastics to justify them? Just accept that stupid shit is stupid and move on. If your ideas can't go from there they're not worth shit. Don't give me that "religion for the masses crap".

Yeah. It's actually pretty funny how much of a materialist Gould was. He instantly shut down any discussion as soon as he smelled a hint of mysticism. https://youtu.be/RVrnn7QW6Jg?t=525
