A lot of people criticize in Inception that the characters don’t do anything too crazy in the dream world but I think that’s the point. The characters are all established men in suits. The dream is filled with grey skyscrapers and corporate assailants in the mind of a soulless businessman. They’re not creative people and are committed to their lame responsibilities in the real world so they don’t do anything extravagant in their dreams, except for the main character who uses the dream for emotional connection that he can’t find in modern life. I doubt this is on purpose. Nolan's mind just operates in cold, grey, corporate modernity, just look at his Batman movies. They take the story of a man dressing up as a bat to fight crime with absolute seriousness, there's not a moment of humor or emotional color, and anytime "love" comes into play, it feels forced and lifeless. It's true of all of his movies, and I'm a fan of his. He took the sense of fun out of comic book superheroes, he took the sense of wonder out of space, he took creativity out of dreams, he took the sense of awe out of magic, his films are just cerebral and unbalanced, they deal with ideas and concepts more than people.
