Are there any good books about American culture and American values?
especially about American culture during the "Gilded Age", from the 1870s to about 1900?
I'm not Ameircan, and I would like to learn more about American culture. pic is one of the books I found.

Gertrude Stein is the perfect fusion of social darwinism and social degeneracy: very American.

Democracy in America is a classic work on early American society.

Anything Mark Twain is a good place to learn a bit about 18th century America while also being /cozy/. I believe he coined the term "guilded age".

Biographies of influential Americans wouldn't be bad, either. Theodore Roosevelt is sort of the embodiment of the reaction against the Gilded Age, so he might be of interest to you.

If you care about the African American experience, W.E.B DuBois is the starting point for social/political works, and any of the Harlem Renaissance poets wouldn't be a bad place to start, either.

This is a decent introduction, at least. You can get a bit more obscure and in-depth if you've moved past this stuff
