17892317 No.17892317 [Reply] [Original]

Plato disencourages the maintenance of philosophy through literature and emphasizes the importance of the philosophical tradition being rhetorical; philosophizing shouldn't be passive, since, afterall, its an "activity".

He doesn't focus on tradition, he just sees what is effective when he does it. You can attach to the written words, which is misleading.
Just keep the focus on what you want and don't make secondary stuff distract you. We almost only have books to learn from.

That does become negative.
If you don't have talented and competent teachers then all you have is textbook excercises that go nowhere, which is the current problem of mass education. It has become atrociously bad.

You can learn a great deal from the people around you and the narrative of life, you will never know everything, you will know about what you care about, only difference between a person who learnes through rhetoric and a bookworm is that the person who gained knowledge from rhetoric actively improved his life.

I think he is right in a perfect world, we don't live in a utopia after all.

Lets be honest, he also would have discouraged people from reading the Iliad and the Odyssey, or any kind of comedies or tragedies.

If he witnessed the invention of the television, he would literally cringe himself to death, which is a great reason why our generation discouraging television is good: it portrays meaningless stories and fables where one loses oneself or aspects of oneself. :3

>> No.17892632

>>17892607
I honestly think it wouldnt make that big of a difference if all literature suddenly dissapeared from the face of the earth, people would still ( and will always) be more susceptible to education by rhetoric, the act of reading creates an unhealthy realm of passivity that could possibly create an imbalance in life, it would probably be not bad to integrate it into your life if you need to for downtime, but yeah, in a perfect world, we'd be part of pure experience.

>> No.17892651

People who read have been and always will be a minority, its purpose is a state of isolation, which most people dont favor

90% of it is a monologue which was hugely influential in medieval and islamic philosophy. Laws is a dialogue between three old men representing different constitutions. The Parmenides also ends with a gigantic monologue, and his student wrote 4000 pages of what we would consider traditional philosophical treatises.
