>I just imagine books like a movie
Did movies ruin literature? It seems like anyone who would say they read or write books like they see a movie is lacking imagination and/or a soul.

>Going through Goodreads reviews
>"I don't find the characters likeable, didn't root for any of them"
>"The characters' motivations didn't make sense"

I would say the blame is on TV rather than cinema proper. Those HBO shows with huge ass casts have warped how young people approach stories.

Movies can be good and show stuff from an interesting perspective. But imagining shots like from an average Hollywood garbage movie is basedboy tier.
I myself imagine books both as pictures and as kind of symbols of what I read. I can sometimes "see" a flavour or an idea but I couldn't paint what I'm seeing

Characters don't need motivations for anything. Why the fuck would the judge give a page long monologue explaining why he's raping this particular injun?

>> No.17888443

Imagining books like a movie is sort of like using a 5000$ PC to play Minecraft. Books are a vastly superior medium because they need not concern themselves with the linearity of time flow and superficiality of visuals.

sometimes i imagine i'm a director and in charge of every aspect of production for an adaptation of the novel i'm reading, from pre to post. i imagine entire days of filming on location and building relationships with the cast and crew, pulling a malick and telling the cameramen to shoot the birds flying overhead, and then pissing off the author by cutting out half the dialogue (even though i filmed it), rendering the plot incomprehensible, and delivering a 90 minute visual poem that only vaguely resembles the original novel

>Characters don't need motivations for anything.
yes they do. they just don't need coherent motivations.
Their motivation could be "I need to fuck the space demons out of my cat to keep the golden gate bridge from collapsing" but that's still a motivation.

My mind produces more a kind of false memory of a dream when I read books, it's not a smooth movie-like procedure, but the flitting and vague flashes of dream content.

>>A play and a movie script are the same thing

they´re not because films have a lot more going on besides a script, it´s the formal relationship between cinematography, lightining and sound, a good filmmaker knows also how to use it in a way that can elevate the narrative of a story
