Awful math chart. You can use the internet to review high school math and then you do non-proof-based calculus and linear algebra to get a grasp of it. MIT OCW single variable, multivariable and linear are great resources. Then you do a proof/logic book (Velleman is indeed great) and then you study calculus again using spivak and linear algebra again using axler, now following the proofs and doing lots of exercises.

Then you're basically free to go anywhere in undergrad math. Rudin for analysis, Artin or Dummit/Foote for algebra, Munkres for topology...

What is even the point of this chart? It seems to spend far too much time on introductory material for aspiring mathematicians, and is too narrow in scope for people doing it as a hobby. I can’t imagine It would be useful to anyone other than a child prodigy who begins it at age 10-12.

Glad to see others have commented on this as well. If anyone wants to get into analysis my new favorite series for undergrads is Princeton Lectures in Analysis by Stein and Shakarchi, and for those who want to know a little more about real analysis I recommend Axler’s new book. Rudin is tried and true, but it’s drier than it has to be in light of the state of modern analysis.

Honestly, this chart is not deep enough. After set theory, you should start Group Theory immediately. Then you go into Galois theory to construct the algebraic numbers. Then you go into real analysis not even calculus) to construct the reals. In order to do that, you'll talk about limits. Once you do that, only then algebra will make sense, and then you can talk about functional analysis (derivatives & integration).

Then you talk about Linear Algebra & Dif Eq, then you go into multi-dimensional functional analysis. You can also put basic analytic geometry before what we know as "Calc 3" just so you know why it's useful.

After that, you can do whatever you want.

Without consulting this chart, I've already gone through Mythology, The Histories, Hesiod and Theognis, The Iliad, and am currently finishing up The Odyssey.

From what I have read so far, this chart is very solid but is sorely missing Jason and the Argonauts. I learned more about ancient greek culture from that myth than I did from any of the above works. Severely overlooked.

Anyone who wants to study the Greeks, use this chart, but supplement it with Jason and the Argonauts. Best place for it would be right after Mythology.

Odds are nobody in this thread will take this advice or remember I said it, but I still feel compelled to say it just in case.

It’s not so much that it’s any better than the other myths, but from everything I’ve read that’s the one I felt did a best job communicating what the values of the time were like. It was largely glorification of semirandom raids and they mostly didnt try to portray it as too much else (although they sometimes justify what they did a little bit). Jason era Greeks were not too far off from say, vikings, in terms of culture. that’s something you dont get from the iliad or other works.

There are also some allusions to Jason and his crew in Iliad although I dont remember them now, and Jason’s crew has never been too consistent so that could be retroactive. But it seems like the audience was expected to already be familiar with Jason’s adventures by the time they tackle Iliad/Odyssey, and that’s something modern readers may want to account for if they want an informed reading.

From a /his/ perspective it’s significant just for predating Iliad, as well. I believe it’s the oldest complete record of a piracy voyage we have, the only ones predating it being fractions of literal trade records mentioning piracy rather than full myths/stories.

On a personal note. I like Jason’s swashbuckling fantasy adventures as a genrepiece more than the more serious greek epics like Iliad/Odyssey. That’s just a personal preference for my enjoyment though. It’s very pulp.

It’s not as essential as Iliad/Odyssey but I think it’s criminally overlooked and should be recommended to anyone who wants a complete look at the greeks. If you’re just after literature, I can see why you might skip it. The other myths feel much more personal. But if you want historical understanding, I think it’s a must read.
