There are godless religions, god isn't necessary for religion-like behaviour.
Perhaps humans are hardwired for religious behaviour, and without god, you will simply make people turn some ideology into a religion, from veganism and human rights to utopian ideologies like marxism or anarchocapitalism or transhumanism.
People will get their religion fix somehow. And perhaps it will be with worse things than christianity. Christianity at least has proven it can provide stability to society for centuries, it would be a solid system for an engineer. The new things people try searching for meaning in their life, we have no idea how good or bad or stable or unstable they are.

What it really needs is to shift away from the "I'm an atheist, debate me" stereotype and into the realm of realising that if you're an atheist you've already won the argument. Atheists lowering themselves to having shitty one sided "debates" with creationists and flat earth retards has resulted in it's current tarnished image. Don't debate anyone. They already lost. Even the best arguments for theism are weak as dog piss. The debate doesn't need to happen and indeed can't happen unless the theist is bringing something, anything to the table.
