Why not, I used to not bother but once I figured out how to set up exclusive bookshelves so they wouldn't fuck with my reading stats there was no reason not to.

>> No.17619021

Someone please enlighten me. What the fuck is the point of goodreads?
>You can get recommendations!
Moby Dick is rated significantly lower than any of the Harry Potter books.
>You can track the books you’ve read!
A simple text file or piece of paper suffices for this, and is more versatile.

I’d rather just hit my bookmark which brings up a nice colourful website with book covers and it’s all there. Just gotta click my bookmark.
If you want to do a word document.. sure, do that.

Once you build up a network of friends you can get recommendations from them and ignore the top-rated reviews. Sometimes the algorithm recommends interesting stuff, but most of the time it's useless.

No its not, unless you read like 5 books a year.

This. I just log my books into an excel spreadsheet with a simple one-line note of what I liked it disliked. I tried to use Goodreads once but the UI is too ugly.

true! in this case someone has done a lot of the work for me though

>> No.17623598

Answer me one question: What is the purpose of tracking all of this? I think it doesnt really matter how much youve read in a year or something since these statistics dont say anything about what you learned, your involvement with a text or how much youve got out of a work of literature. Who cares if youve read a hundred books a year when half of them is trashy fiction or something?

>> No.17623846

Why does it matter? The Kindle app automatically tracks progress when you link your accounts. Nothing's required on your end but optionally giving a rating. You get a timestamp for when you start and finish a book. Contrarians will always find something to be snide about.

>> No.17623872

>>17623846
What do you mean "something to be snide about"? I just dont understand what you mean to achieve by using some sort of tracking software, be it goodreads, kindle or just a text document. You can do whatever you want, I just dont get what seeing how many books youve finished accomplishes.

it isnt about the ratings, its about their algorithm recommending similar books across 50-60 metrics. Im not interested in some hole's 3 star review of buddenbrooks.
