I think it has to do with the uplifting/enlightening factor of literature on the one hand, and the width and depth of literature as a unifying interest. The informational factor as in it takes more effort to consume and to a certain extent forces you to form your own thoughts, thereby making it easier to spot opinions you don't agree with. The depth factor as in there's a thousand perspectives one can take on any single book. Compare that with say kpop communities and you'll see that binary opinions are much more fluid and nuanced generally speaking.

While many people complain about the quality of this board and supposedly yearn for better discussion, 2 out of 3 retards bait and respond to bait posts. In a smaller community such issues would be much easier to tackle because then you get less basedboi and chad points for derailing a thread you don't like.

The anonymity makes it so that you can technically samefag with noone noticing. Another factor is again the basedboi points which regulate and demarcate accepted and laudable opinions. Ultimately it's an issue of culture.
