How do English professors who teach freshmen level courses not want to shoot themselves when they grade an entire class worth of essays? Just peer reviewing one essay written in ebonics or by a retard is painful enough

My favorite was when the guy teaching that Yale Open Course on Literary Theory said that in the dozens of sections of Intro to Western Lit he had to teach, Yale students could never seem to spell Iliad correctly. He mentioned that anecdote while reminding the Yale students that Fredric Jameson's name is spelled Fredric.

In one of my 400-level English courses, we had to turn in a half-page response to each novella the day before we discussed it as a way to decide what would be our main points of discussion the next day. The day we were to discuss Death in Venice, our professor remarked that every single person who mentioned the scene at the beginning had misspelled cemetery.
