He was a mediocre poet. Bland metaphors, repetitive meter, bland ideas. It's all derivative and highly rhetorical.
Still, probably the greatest verse-maker of the English language, as well as a very fine aphorist.

But poetry isn't verse, it's something else. Verse is just its usual vehicle.

What do you mean by "verse-maker" he was a great aphorist and probably would have been on par with Montaigne if he wrote essays.
