“The heart is a lonely hunter” is the first thing I can think of that kinda meets this definition. The main character is a deaf mute, and most of the book’s about how those around him find it relatively therapeutic to spend time with him, even though he can’t provide any answers to their problems. It’s not exactly what you’re looking for I think but it’s a good read anyway.

No he's a depressive with nothing to live for. Hes on a whaling boat, the entire book is telling you how abnormal everyone on the boat is how did you miss that.
If he was a normie he wouldnt be sleeping with Queequeg or hunting whales dumbass

Just read analytic philosophy. The catch is that you will have a hard time appreciating atypical authors unless you are yourself atypical.

Simply put, low functioning needs like constant help with everything and can't live alone, high functioning can live by themselves. I think there are like 3 levels. So I guess there's a middle ground where they only kinda need help? It's a very vague term though.
I haven't read the book since like 2010 admittedly, but I remember him being able to get along well enough. He has some pitfalls as a result of leaving his comfort zone to find his mother, but he's also only like 14 or 15, any sheltered kid would have trouble, especially an autistic one.
Correct me if you think i'm wrong though.

>high-functioning neuro-atypical

I don't have autism, but suffer from borderline personality disorder and mild schizofrenia, clouded by a permanent fog of severe depression. The normies suspect something is off, but nobody except close friends and family realise how bad it really is.

I don't have a specific book with a specific character. But House of Leaves was shattered enough to make me feel at home. Ligotti narrows the surreal feeling I usually have that something truly disturbing lies beyond the thin veil of the ordinary world and normal society.
