1740734 No.1740734 [Reply] [Original]

Okay, here's the thing:
I'm a pretty well-known writer. Don't ask me who I am, because I will not tell you. I've been visiting 4chan regularly since it first opened, and it's one of my greatest sources of inspiration.

Whether you're one of those faggots who say things like "lol lol 4chan was never good", I think we all agree that this place is quite remarkable, as one can find a lot of interesting discussions and just awesome stuff in general.

The thing is, I've been warming up for a few years now to write what I think of as my magnum opus, and I was wondering if I should drop some easter eggs in it pointing to 4chan.

Since I believe /lit/ would be the board most interested in something like this (or rather, the only board who actually reads), I decided to ask you; would you like to see something like this in a book, or would you think it's cheesy?

Thanks.

Like I said, no way I won't reveal who I am just now. If I do the reference thing though you'll definitely see it when the book comes out and then I can come over and we can talk openly. I've wanted to do so for some time now, in fact if some of you are careful enough you might've spotted some threads I made where I tried to get your opinions on me. But I am restricted by professional ties to not talk about my stuff before it comes out, otherwise the publishers and the P.R. people can give me hell about it.

Like I said though, this will PROBABLY be my last novel ever, and then we're totally free to discuss anything.

Am I liked? Surprisingly, I think so. Mostly the people who dislike me seem to be two somewhat opposite groups, the more conservative, moral types and the completely evolved leftist hipster types. I've thought about it and I definitely know the reasoning behind this, but it's unrelated.

Hi guys, what's going on in this thread?

>> No.1740953

Too subtle or "veiled reference" may end up just being confusing, especially if it's your "magnum opus" that you imagine people will be studying after your death. Vague references to 4chan, which will most likely be forgotten eventually, could turn it into something people "study" rather than read, and then only if you've pulled off the amazing trick of actually writing a "magnum opus" on purpose.

>> No.1740963

>>1740953
I realize that. However there will be a lot of references in this book, most of them quite obvious ones, so I think it'd be easy for people to spot a reference when it comes up.

i was thinking of this the other day. and it would like when people try to sell shirts with memes on them. there are plenty of stories to tell, and the thought of reading something about 4chan in a novel puts me off.

kind of like how boring it is to read a short story about someone checking emails or having some aim convo. i suppose there is good and bad ways to do it, but i wouldn't bother. that's just me.

Your primary aim as an author should be to tell your story directly and succintly. Any sentences that go out of their way to make an obscure 4chan reference would normally be seen as wasted space. However, if a meme or in-joke happens to fit with the narrative and adds to the overall theme, then by all means go ahead. Plenty of renowned authors have added subtle jokes in this way.

Of course, this is basic fiction writing knowledge, so as a supposed well-known author, you would already know this... right?
