Yes, he and his mother had a terrible relationship. She caused his father to kill himself and then moved across Germany to join the free love movement, and so Schopenhauer resented her all his life. On top of this, she was often abusive. She even threw him down a flight of stairs once.

Philosophy is not life advice though. It's not some sophisticated self-help. It's mostly elaborate theories and argumentation, and you are supposed to judge the reasoning by yourself, again not like some advice from self-help gurus or clergymen that you're just supposed to take. The quote from OP is also very obscure, probably taken from a private letter or something. I'm sure most of us wouldn't want our text messages published posthumously.

Nothing says "fuck you, leave me alone" like an unruly beard. I don't like to give the impression I'm overly interested in being talked to. It's also a plus at work since looking more aggressive is a good deterrent. I work alone at night and the cops are an hour away best case scenario. I'll take any advantage I can get. Also, a beard unironically keeps your face much warmer up in a mountain winter.

>> No.17317540

People who make everything about calculated social signaling--whatever happens to be the case about what does and doesn't look good on them--have no feeling for beauty, natural or otherwise. I suppose if I were chronically depressed or borderline schizo I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a fashion disaster and sartorial splendor, or between hot and tryhard-not, or between a mind ugly in its awkwardness and a great poet's. Some of them make adequately readable philosophers, no doubt, but mostly for morbid curiosity.

It's strange how you talk about the world as will and representation as an obscure book. Aside from being Kantian trash (carefully removing the few good parts of Kant first), it perfectly fits the description of anon. The Parerga were at least bitterness about a few specific objects that can warrant it. The world as w&r is sour grapes cope elevated to a cosmic level.

The absolute seething. That said, this is a rare example of a trad seethe that’s still very funny. We’re bombarded with it so much online in places like this now that it’s not as enjoyable as it was when you only found it in places like Confederacy of Dunces or the odd neckbeard at school. This quote in the covid era makes little sense. You're supposed to wear a full-mask full-time, so what does it matter whether I have a beard or not?
