Is Rap a modern type of poetry, it has the same melodical rythm to it? I think it has supplanted poetry as far as social commentary is concerned, here is a sample of something that is not easily achieved in poetry.

I believe it is, but that doesn't make it inherently good or higher minded than other forms of lyricism. As a genre it's not really progressed in 30 years, it's still generally obsessed with the same topics (money, women, gangs etc).

As cliche as it sounds you're better looking at underground rap if you want to find anything of merit. Here's something I've been listening to recently, give it a try:
