Why does music effect me more than any book has?

Because you're an underage zoomer born past 1999 who was brought into a world overloaded with information making it an equivalent of a massive microwave turning your brain into scrambled eggs, you lack the attention span to sit down and read a book, hell you probably don't even listen to songs in their entirety, you just choose the parts you like and play them on loop. All of this has been me projecting my past self onto (You) BTW

>> No.17253063

forms of art effect us differently. music is much more immediate, much more visceral. a song will make you cry, it will evoke powerful feelings and evoke them quickly. but as quickly as they come, they go.

books rather, leave something in you that isn't immediate. you might carry a book around in your heart for a month after reading it. it touches you in a different way than more sensory things (music, film, etc) might. this doesn't make any form of art better or worse than another. they achieve different things and for that reason you should have a breadth of artistic interests.

i came here to say this. its basically just a fast/short term versus slow/long term issue

buttchin, wow low standards

Older music styles have a transcendent aspect. Even if you don't believe in god they can incite oceanic feels.
Rap and hip-hop are trash.

>> No.17253449

>>17253404
Music is for evocation. Hip hop, rap, jazz, etc., are for conjuring up a place and feeling some don’t like to inhabit

Oceanic feelings can still be incited

I don't know. I listen to far more music than I have read books and watched films and the only medium that has both come close to/made me cry is literature and other written things. Words, sentences and paragraphs arranged in all orders leaves something both immediate and long term and with the readers imagination allows them to picture anything, far more than any other medium we have access to. Music is playing with something extremely abstract and beyond and its hard to understand but it is certainly a marvel to behold. Music gives me frisson and boosts of morale as if I were seeing through a mirror into the other side, but it doesn't really meddle with my emotions and I don't think it's as instant as you make it out to be.

>> No.17254404

There is perhaps nothing more pleasant than listening to Prokofiev or Shostakovich while reading Dostoevsky. The emotional tone of the music heightens the experience of his writing.
