Everyman's Library. Clothbound covers, sewn bindings, acid-free paper, and a ribbon bookmark, you can get no finer quality at the median price point. Everyman's is the optimal balance between economy and luxury.

Bullshit. Maybe 50 years ago. Now:
1. There is not a single "press" within 20 miles of Oxford. They trashed the whole operation there. All the books are actually manufactured in horrible industrial parks in East Anglia (if you're lucky) or imported from third world countries.
2. They use the worst possible materials and bindings. Their softcovers use cheap glue and acid-rich paper. And their hardcovers? Oh you wanted a real sewn book? HA! You don't even get endbands.

Folio is okay. They have some nice things, like maybe unique illustrations and great covers, but they feel more tightly-bound and wooden than literally any other hardcover I've ever purchased, except for my Penguin classic Paradise Lost. Holy shit that thing is a cinderblock. But what makes the Folio so offensive is that it is cumbersomely big. I have a Folio copy of C&P, I got it for the translation (McDuff), and the quality is there, but the dimensions of the book and thickness of the paper cut combined horribly bloat it's weight and comfortability. I'd sooner get a Modern Library or Everyman's Library hardcover before another Folio unless it was something very particular/special.

Yes, caring what other people think is stupid, but it's possible to care about aesthetics purely for their own sake. I like my apartment to look good, and that includes my bookshelf, even though I almost never bring anyone into it. I just want to surround myself with beauty. Not a black wall of penguin classics.

I mostly just look at the options available on Amazon unless I have seen a particular edition I like. Is there somewhere else I can go to find alternate editions for paperback/hardcover? Amazon usually only has a couple options and often I don't like the aesthetic / quality of any of them.

>> No.17190929

It looks better (at least on LoA, Everyman and Modern Library books), and given that those presses are all publishing work that has been published before, there's no value in the dust-jackets of their books.

Well, that's not my shelf, it's just one I found online. But I would imagine that the dust jackets are thrown out. If you go back 100 years or so, dust jackets were just wrappers that were supposed to be disposed, and the decorative/textual elements of the actual bindings and spine had more care put to them.

But really, if someone likes the look of a book series without dust-jackets, why would anyone care what he did with them? These editions are all mass-produced and are not collectible investments the way actual first editions of the works they contain might be.
