these books weren't about the ~70% of russians who were pretty much slaves; it's about the ~30% who had some sort of means, even if it is a meagre living. think about the underground man, he was poor and held a minor bureaucratic position that didn't pay much, yet he could still afford a servant. this doesn't mean that these people weren't poor, it just goes to show how miserably destitute the bottom 70% were and how they had no place in society other than labourers.

I read a portion of the memoirs of Alexander Herzen. He was a “love child” and well taken care of his whole life, but wrote some descriptions of some of the servants lives, and everyone one of them made me tear up. Real people with the absolute worst lives.
