How do you cope with the fact that so much literature has been lost. The Greeks wrote thousands of plays and we only have a small fraction of them.

I don't lament the loss of what I've never had.

I wouldn't have read most of them anyway. From a logical standpoint, my ignorance of those plays is invariant whether they still existed or were lost to time.

I like to daydream about being a time traveller who exclusively travels to ancient Greece in order to recover all these lost texts. I usually have a secret team (secret because almost no one can find out I'm capable of time traveling) consisting of a few renown academics from prestigious universities and costumiers who craft the required clothing for the tasks. Before undertaking these missions, we spend a few days to a few weeks coming up with plans on how I should approach them without revealing that I'm in fact a time traveler. For this, I must keep practicing and improving my ancient Greek. We also take into account other factors such as most optimal year range to approach the philosopher in question (approaching Socrates during the Peloponnesian Wars could be dangerous but more beneficial since he was at its peak).
Anyway, I suppose that's how I cope. It maybe could make some interesting TV show.

Do we know enough about the phonology of ancient greek that someone could go back in time and be accepted in their society?

I think we do than extent but we will never find out for sure unless we literally travel back to ancient Greece. The closest thing we have is modern Greek and there are some YouTube videos of some guy reading Illiad in ancient Greek but no idea if it's accurate.
In my daydreams, I would need to lie that I'm not a native Greek but rather someone from a far away colony in Iberia in which ancient Greek felt in disuse.
