Most of them did feel that Marxism had "failed." Many of them died broken and disappointed.

Anyone claiming Marxism hasn't been "refuted" is not even slightly in dialogue with contemporary Marxism. Just about every other thing that comes out of a serious Marxist's mouth these days is couched in terms of overcoming the crisis of the left, resurrecting the left, etc. It is never predicated on basic confidence in the left's mission or present state of health.
