Do me a favor, OP. Take the lid off of your toilet tank, you'll see something like pic related. Your goal is to stop the toilet from flushing, the simplest way to do this is to interrupt the action of the handle from having any effect on the other mechanisms; so try to detach the chain from either the handle or the flapper.
