17026400 No.17026400 [Reply] [Original]

>The ironclad wastes of the Eagles Nest atop Kehlsteinhaus was a portent to the Zone’s grip; 3rd Infantrymen flowing from the burned façade with whatever sensible treasures sans soot they could get their hands on. Slothrop sits on a tree trunk glaring at the mountainside air, hawks encircling above while fawns inspect craters below, mother deer projecting a plea to follow her, a bid away from the people and their Silly War… and the Spring seeps from all the hollowed streams underground, bestowing waters like the Styx for consumption to forget this terrible time… and the celebrations of hops fueling the carnal conquistadors, supposedly on the good side, unfurl into the unfolding sky, as clear now as the crystalline waters of some private beach where eyes cannot gaze upon the perdition of Men Of Folly—a chance flight out to cremate the care of pernicious beings. A net gain nowhere in sight to him. A dawning of some terrible truth… imagined marionette strings dangling from the fingertips of some gnarled sepulchral hands, placating the disgust of spilling viscera upon the green aisles of Europe, warding off the Angels, who now float, watching, stretched spread-eagle in the penumbra of the Moon, wallowing as their wings are clipped and their spinal fluid fills the space like plasma… the Farben techocrates, whose chants and sigils were spread across the Atlantic, can now feast upon five-course celebrations at black-tie events. The Burnt Offering accepted. All Theater. Terrible Theater.

What was his problem? Was he CIA? How did he know so much about the Argentines and the U-Boats? Did he smoke himself into insanity?

He obviously did extensive research into the OSS and the CIA, folks like William F. Friedman, etc. I wonder if his time at Boeing brought him close to military projects - of course, he learned a lot about rocket engineering from there, I wonder what else?

I think he was privy to ARPANET. I'm sure the military powers that be were well aware of what they were making at the time, how it would eventually morph into the internet.
I wonder if Pynchon was privy to that as well... would explain the theme of Slothrop's identity being completely atomized by powers far more powerful than he.

Its an unsynced orchestra playing a very technical piece; each instrument is impressive when heeded on its own, but the whole isn't very beautiful. Sort of. His position in Boeing put him in proximity to Bomarc surface to air missiles, which ran on something called SAGE, a direct predcessor to ARPANET, basically a bunch of computer terminals connected across state lines via phonelines, one of the earliest iterations of what would become regular consumer internet. I think he had some inkling even then that basically all technologies began with exorbitant military-industrial funding and then eventually trickle down to consumer-level goods, but that foundation in the powers that be never truly goes away, and I think that was a major source of his paranoia. I think that's what he was sort of alluding to with W.A.S.T.E in Lot 49, when he shows people who assume it's just something their workplace uses to send messages, or when Oedipa encounters random bums and poor people using it too, I think Pynchon had some inkling that this technology would arrive for the consumer (like modern internet), something available to the general public that everyone assumes is open and free for their use when in reality, it's always been a defense project byproduct.

I've kind of come to associate the V2 Rocket with this same sort of lineage of technological advancement that led to internet in that it was, for its time, the culmination of the bleeding edge of advancement in countless disciplines, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Ballistics, Engineering, all come together to kill from hundreds of miles away. For the first time, the world was on a grid. This idea appears in variation in basically all of his works, Mason & Dixon coming to terms with their committing raw, unbroken landscape to territory, all for the corporate fascism of the East India Trading Company would be another example. I remember Inherent Vice references ARPANET directly. There's a looming sadness that kind of hangs over that whole book, it's not the 60's anymore and Doc's persona still remains unchanged in a world that is quickly proving it to be obsolete. I remember there being some quote in there somewhere about there being a coming time where there'd be no more leads for him to follow because everything and everyone would be accounted for.

>When his parents came to visit, he introduced his mother this way: "Jules,
this is my mother. She's an anti-Semite. I just didn't want my children to
surround themselves with Jews." I remember her as an exceptionally beautiful
woman, all cut glass, ivory and sable. I believe she had been a nurse, had a
