Beckett is unironically a litmus test for midwits. Lots of other things can function this way too, but Beckett is particularly helpful because it's the kind of thing that stands out when you're a 20ish kid trying to figure out how to seem smart to others, and a lot of the advice you're getting is bad advice from midwit Americans who read the New Yorker. It's fine to read Beckett, but not growing out of him quickly is a major warning sign. It means you never learned to distinguish the midwit LARB literature from real literature.

It's like when you see adults talking about Harry Potter as if any adult should have any opinion on Harry Potter whatsoever. Beckett is in the same tier (specifically, tier 0) of literature as Harry Potter, and is only superficially different. Also in that tier: Vonnegut, "magical realism," anything read by women.
