It’s not as bad as /lit/ claims it is. Just don’t expect any revolutionary, mind-blowing ideas. Also, the rest of this board usually feels frustrated after realizing (upon finishing the book and not earlier) that thick books take a long time to read, so keep that in mind as well. You’re in for a simple, comfy story if that’s what you’re looking for.

Murakami's books are, in my experience, funny, easy to read books that are perfect starter books and just nice reads overall.
Also girls tend to like him for whatever reason, so you can always talk about Murakami to a girl that 'reads'
