If your society raised you to think that life is meant to be nothing but pure pleasure, you would naturally assume sometime is wrong with your life. As life, for the most part, it cannot be pure pleasure. So then, how would you cure someone like this? You should tell them that life is in fact not pure pleasure, life is suffering. These two points of view come together and cancel each other out. So the person who thought life should be pure pleasure by understanding that life is suffering comes to rest in the eye of the hurricane and finds eternal peace.

The first Noble Truth, "idham dukkham", translates literally to "this is pain", but more accurately means "pain is". The translation "life is suffering" is meant to convey
>life is composed of many things, and one of them is suffering, such that suffering is a part of life

It is painfully obvious that people are chasing pleasure constantly, sex, drugs, money, entertainment, a better phone/house, (yous), ect. Western society (and at the time of the buddha Indian society) has the ideal that we should strive towards pure pleasure. The whole idea that life is suffering is just an antidote to this idea, which helps balance things.

I'd highly recommend reading pic related, even just the first few chapters, as it explains the point I'm trying to make perfectly.

You can choose to follow cyclical paths of suffering, i.e. giving into desire that causes the cycle, or learn to overcome it.

>inb4 but isn't wanting to overcome desire a desire in itself

Yes, but not all desire is bad; only that which causes impermanent contentment -- like pursuing sex, or constantly eating, or going after the latest trend, etc.

Gautama, Siddhārtha. Dislike him. A cheap nihilist, insipid and foolhardy. A pied piper, pathological narcissist and a cloying moralist. Some of his modern disciples are extraordinarily amusing. Nobody takes his claims about remembering past lives seriously.
Majjhima Nikāya. His best work, though an obvious and shameless imitation of Yājñavalkya's "Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad"
Dīgha Nikāya. Dislike it intensely.
Dhammapada. Dislike it intensely. Ghastly rigmarole.
